Tender 10604 – Galeairy Lake Dam Rehabilitation

Closing: September 17, 2019 at 11:00am

Tender for the procurement of construction services for the rehabilitation of the Galeairy Lake Dam, in the community of Whitney, Bancroft District, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

The Galeairy Lake Dam is located in the community of Whitney (in South Algonquin Township) at the outlet of Galeairy Lake, approximately 100m upstream from the Highway 60 bridge in Whitney. The dam is a 4.3m high, 100m+ long structure consisting of a concrete gravity dam portion (6 stop log bays, 2 abutments) and an earth embankment portion at its south end. Its outflow discharges into the Madawaska River, which flows in an easterly direction toward the Ottawa River. The structure controls water levels on the lake for recreation, and fish/wildlife management purposes.

The dam was constructed in its current configuration by the Department of Public Works in 1951. A safety assessment of the dam in 2006 revealed that the dam did not fully meet current standards for structural safety and/or hydraulic capacity. Deficiencies included an inadequate stability factor of safety for the south earth embankment, and insufficient spillway capacity for the Inflow Design Flood (IDF).

The proposed work consists of minor structural repairs to the concrete portion of the dam, safety upgrades (new hand railing, etc.), rehabilitation of the earth embankment, and the addition of an overflow spillway with maintenance walkway. Work is anticipated to commence in October 2019 and is being phased over two (2) Ministry fiscal years and must be complete by March 14, 2021.
